What Is Drain Snaking?

Drain snaking uses a manual or motorized rotor connected to a cable that spins as it is carefully fed down the drain line. A special auger head is connected to the end of the cable to help break up and remove clogs from the drain line.

How Does Drain Snaking Work?

Our Honolulu drain cleaning plumbers determine the source of the clog and remove the necessary plumbing to gain access to the drain line. Next, the drain snaking machine is turned on, and the cable with the spinning auger head is fed into the drain line.

The head breaks up the clog and also removes debris stuck on the sides of the drain line. Any excess debris is removed from the drain line when we pull the cable out of the drain. The smaller particles left inside the pipe rinsed away by running hot water down the drain line.

When Is Drain Snaking Used?

Drain snaking can be used on all types of plumbing drain pipes to remove clogs. In addition, this plumbing service can be used to remove debris from inside the pipes to help prevent clogs from forming as part of an annual preventative plumbing maintenance service.

Drain snaking is also recommended for older plumbing systems where the pipes could be damaged using hydro jetting. Additionally, this service can be used to clean drain lines as part of a drain repair and replumbing service.

What Are the Benefits of Drain Snaking?

Some of the benefits of using our high-speed snaking to clean your drains include the following:

  • An affordable option to have clogs removed and your drain lines professionally cleaned.
  • An effective solution to remove all types of clogs without damaging the drain and sewer lines.
  • A powerful method that can break up tree roots and the most stubborn clogs.
  • An easy way to remove hard water deposits (descale) from the inside of drain lines.

How Do I Know I Need Drain Cleaning?

Your home’s plumbing system does give you early warnings that a clog is developing, including:

  • Slowly draining water in one or more drains
  • Foul odors coming from the drains
  • Fruit flies in the drain, usually in the kitchen
  • Clogs that keep recurring no matter how many times you unblock them
  • Water backs up into a different drain than the one it initially went down
  • Gurgling noises occur when running water that is coming from one or more sink drains

What Is the Difference Between a Drain Snake and a Plumbing Snake?

A drain snake and a plumbing snake are essentially the same things. The terms are often used interchangeably. However, there are different types of plumbing snakes that can be used to clean drain lines and clear clogs.

Types of Drain Snakes

The first type of drain snake you may have seen is a hand drain snake. This is manually operated by using a hand crank to rotate the spring line and auger head to remove clogs. It is useful when the clog is in the first six feet of the drain line from the sink, tub, or shower drain.

The second type of drain snake is the motorized version that our plumbers use to tackle more difficult clogs and clean the drain lines simultaneously. Our motor-drive plumbing snakes can be used on all different sizes of plumbing pipes up to several inches in diameter.

The third type of plumbing snake is considered more of an industrial, heavy-duty machine. This machine is used for larger drain and sewer pipes. The motor is more powerful, so the spinning head on the drain snake will break up tree roots and just about any blockage.

Which Is Better: Drain Snaking or Hydro Jetting?

Drain snaking is well-suited for removing clogs and cleaning drain lines. However, snaking is limited by the width of the tips on the end of the cable. Using a plumbing snake is also better suited for older plumbing pipes as it will not damage them.

Hydro jetting is highly effective at removing all types of clogs by using pressurized water to blast the clog and debris away, much like a power washer. In addition, hydro jetting is better suited for removing clogs and cleaning commercial sewer lines.

Our plumbers in Honolulu will assess your home’s plumbing system to determine the most appropriate method to use when clearing clogs and repairing drain lines. Sometimes a drain camera inspection may be necessary to determine the source of the clog or damaged plumbing pipe.

For instance, if the clog is just a bunch of hair and soap scum clogged within six feet of the drain, then using a drain snake would be more cost-effective. On the other hand, if the clog is in the main drain line, hydro jetting could prove to be more effective.
